Sitting on the edge of the National Forest and upon the River Soar, Leicester is a culturally diverse, historically rich city that hosts some fantastic festivals, award-winning visitor museums, stately homes and exciting world food eateries.
Leicester has retained a remarkable record of its past in buildings that still stand today, from ancient Roman pavements and baths to medieval and Tudor houses. The charming ruins in Bradgate Park, birthplace of Lady Jane Grey, are a good place to let off steam after hours of travelling. Alternatively, drive up to Beacon Hill Country Park where there are some spectacular views of Charnwood Forest and the Soar Valley. For an all-weather family-friendly attraction the National Space Centre will enthral with its real rockets, and the largest planetarium dome in the UK.
Leicester also has an eclectic mix of bars, clubs and great music venues. Phoenix is an independent cinema, digital arts centre and café bar located in the Cultural Quarter, and above The Western Pub in the West End is a 50-seat theatre with two seasons of theatre, comedy and spoken word a year.
In terms of shopping, Leicester is well served; John Lewis and all the usual high street favourites are to be found at Highcross, while Stoneygate and The Lanes in the city centre are the places to go for a more exclusive shopping experience.
When you tire of the car, Leicester is a great place to celebrate some old-fashioned forms of transport. Victorian engineering is at its finest at Foxton Lock where you can hire a narrowboat and enjoy the scenery, or jump on a steam train at the Great Central Railway.
Leicester is located at the intersections of the A6, A46, A47 and A607 trunk roads and is served by the nearby M1 motorway. Drivers take caution though: the M1 between Junctions 16 and 21 has been listed among the top 20 worst stretches of road in the UK due to congestion as a result of ongoing roadworks, and accidents caused by the ensuing tailgating. It’s wise to exercise caution on this route and leave a decent gap between your car and the car in front.
