Driving in Reading

Located in the Thames Valley to the west of London, Reading in Berkshire is not too well-known as one of Britain’s must-visit towns. However, once you get there, you’ll discover a surprising amount of things to see and do.

It is sometimes described as being on London’s commuter belt but the influx of daily traffic outweighs the outflow due to the large number of tech companies and international businesses which have made Reading their home.

What Documents Do I Need to Take to My MOT and Service?

You don’t need to bring any documents to your MOT and service appointment. However, there are a few things you may wish to have handy to make your booking as smooth as possible.

Previously, you needed to bring the previous year's MOT certificate, your car’s logbook (V5C) and other letters and documents. All this information is now online and available to all licenced UK MOT testers. This means that you don’t need to show any documents on the day of your appointment.

You may wish to bring or do the following things on the day of your appointment:

  1. Make sure your locking wheel nut key is accessible. This will help the technician remove your car’s wheels if necessary.
  2. Remove any clutter from your boot and the back seats. This will allow access to the spare wheel and make it easier to test the rear seatbelts and seats.
  3. Bring your car’s service book and/or logbook (V5C). The technician may record details of your service in your service book as well as on other paperwork.

Does a Service Include an MOT?

A car service does not include an MOT. They are different aspects of car maintenance and so you must book them separately.

An MOT is a legally required yearly check for every vehicle over 3 years old. It tests your vehicle’s safety and roadworthiness and highlights any serious faults that your car may have. If your vehicle fails, you must get the repairs completed before you can drive it home.

A car service is completely voluntary and acts as a routine health check for your vehicle. It highlights the parts that are suffering from excessive wear and tear so you can repair or replace them. It is the best way to keep your car in good condition and helps to avoid expensive repairs or breakdowns.

In short, a car service includes actual maintenance, whereas the MOT is just a visual check with a pass/fail outcome.
