Driving in Sheffield

You’ll need a week or two to properly explore this extraordinary city which is packed full of cultural, architectural and artistic attractions and delights. But if you’re passing through Sheffield for a shorter period there is a lot you can do in a day.

Sheffield calls itself ‘the outdoor city’ – and for good reason. Studies show that households in the area spend more than anywhere in the UK on equipment for outdoor activities. There are 250 parks, woodlands and gardens, and a third of the city is situated within the Peak District National Park. Sheffield offers a fantastic blend of urban and rural experiences with access to some of the most stunning countryside and scenic roads in the country.

The city has the highest ratio of trees to people in Europe and that may partly explain why Sheffield recently ranked as the happiest city in the UK. It could equally be down to the unrivalled music scene, the abundance of world-renowned arts and culture, the gothic revival architecture, or the growing real ale and craft beer scene.

The Millennium Gallery is the city’s landmark art gallery and is a must see. The Winter Garden, one of Sheffield's most iconic buildings, and the vast Botanical Gardens are both ideal places to while away some tranquil hours after a long drive. On the corner of Norfolk Street, you’ll find the largest theatre complex outside of London, where old and new venues and productions co-exist and some of the best players in the country take to the stage.

Sheffield has excellent shops too. Influenced by the large student population it does vintage especially well and has a plethora of stylish second-hand stores.

Drive into the city via the national motorway network taking the M1 or the M18. The M1 links to London in the South and Leeds to the north and runs north east of the city. Sheffield’s inner ring road has a reputation for being tricky and perplexing so take caution and make sure you’re well prepared.
