From its 18th century status as the Empire’s second city to the urban deprivation and economic malaise of the post-war period, Liverpool has had its fair share of highs and lows. This irrepressible city has bounced back with style to become the thriving and charismatic place it is today, reflected by a stint as European Capital of Culture in 2008.
The main sights are scattered throughout the centre and are easy to reach on foot. Park up at the central 1,600 space multi-storey Liverpool Waterfront Car Park on Kings Dock. Alternatively, in the heart of the city, the Liverpool ONE complex is served by three car parks close to great shopping, museums, theatres, hotels, bars and restaurants.
There’s a fair bit to entertain you by the River Mersey, with the famous ferry crossing and the Albert Dock. Some of the best British art is on show in the celebrated Walker Art Gallery and The Tate Gallery. The World Museum Liverpool is a must see while a revitalised arts and nightlife urban quarter centred on FACT, Liverpool’s showcase for film and the media arts, is the place for contemporary culture. For some great restaurants, Hope Street is the city's foodie street.
Find relief from the crowds up at Everton Brow, a breezy summit a mile from the centre with great views of the Liverpool skyline. Or take a trip to the beautiful Wirral Peninsula, less than an hour’s drive from Liverpool’s city centre. Take one of the Mersey Tunnels and head up to Southport for a scenic drive along the coastal road.
Liverpool City Region is well-connected to the UK motorway network. From the M6 take the M62, M58 or M56 direct to the city. The M62 is often listed as one of the nastiest roads in Britain for lane closures and congestion but the section by Liverpool is not cited as the worst. Roads in the North West Midlands area, on the whole, are some of the safest in the north, particularly the motorways. But there are a number of moderate risk A roads south of Liverpool between the M6 and the M56.
