Set on the banks of the River Clyde, Glasgow is Scotland's largest city and is celebrated for its culture, style and the friendliness of its people. Glasgow combines internationally acclaimed museums and galleries, striking architecture, lively nightlife, unbeatable shopping and top notch restaurants.
A year-round calendar of arts, cultural events and cutting-edge productions earned the city its prize as European City of Culture in 1990. It fact this remarkable city boasts a collection of awards: the National Geographic Traveller voted it in the top 20 of Best Cities in the World; the Rough Guides named it the ‘friendliest city in the world’, and it’s ‘a shopaholic’s paradise’, according to Lonely Planet. It was also recognised as the UK's City of Architecture and Design in 1999, and driving around the city it’s easy to understand why. There is an abundance of impressive Victorian structures as well as the distinctive Art Nouveau masterpieces of legendary architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, such as the famous Glasgow School of Art.
Glasgow city centre is based on a grid system of streets on the north bank of the River Clyde, many of which are pedestrianised or one way.
If you’re keen to drive further afield, there’s an endless list of places to enjoy, including ancient castles, miles of unspoilt coastline, and a choice of dramatic lochs. You can get to Loch Lomond, gateway to the Scottish Highlands, in only 30 minutes, or delight in one of the world's most scenic routes, the A82 from Glasgow to Glencoe. It can get busy in peak season but you won’t find more awe-inspiring views from the driver’s seat.
Glasgow is served by the M8 motorway which passes through the city centre and connects to the M77, M73, and M80 motorways. Bear in mind though that the M8 motorway crosses the River Clyde on the Kingston Bridge - the busiest bridge in Europe.
If you’re driving from London there will be a choice of routes, none of them easy, and with a good smattering of notoriously congested roads such as the M25, the M6 and the M1. If you’re not in a hurry to get to Glasgow you could opt for some A roads, and stop along the way.
