Driving in Huddersfield

Set within the historic county boundaries of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Huddersfield is the tenth largest town in the UK. It is surrounded almost entirely by rolling hills and glorious countryside, situated just a few miles south of the Peak District National Park.

Huddersfield has a diverse cultural scene. It is home to the West Yorkshire Sculpture Park, a vast open air ‘gallery’ covering 500 acres of countryside just outside the city which exhibits work by both modern and contemporary artists including Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. The city is also famous as the hometown of celebrated poet Simon Armitage, and the spiritual home of the UK’s sound system culture.

Huddersfield has an impressive architecture portfolio, with over 200 listed buildings in the town. The Huddersfield Art Gallery on Princess Alexandra Walk is a great place to see established and emerging artists. You can enjoy performances at the Lawrence Batley Theatre or big screen escapism at the Odeon cinema opposite the football stadium.

Huddersfield is also a shopper’s delight with a range of leading high street retailers as well as pricey upscale boutiques. Kingsgate Centre on King Street hosts all the usual high street shops and the Byram Arcade, near the train station, is where you’ll find independent retailers and inviting smaller boutiques. Queensgate Market and Market Hall boast hundreds of stalls selling almost everything imaginable.

The cuisine on offer in Huddersfield is truly cosmopolitan with a wide range of excellent world cuisine; but if good old British food with Yorkshire roots is what you’re after, you can find that too. In terms of watering holes, old style pubs and trendy new bars abound, and to meet the demands from the student population there is a thriving nightlife.

Huddersfield is accessed via the M62 and M1 motorways. But be warned, once you leave the motorway network, the three main arterial roads into the town centre are responsible for the city suffering one of the worst congestion problems in Yorkshire.
