What Does a Drive Belt Do?

The drive belt is a long rubber belt driven by the engine’s crankshaft pulley. As it turns, it powers the parts your car needs to keep running comfortably: the alternator, which charges the battery and runs the electrics, the air con compressor, the power steering pump on cars with hydraulic steering and, on some engines, the water pump.

The belt is usually checked whenever your car needs an alternator repairs because the two parts work so closely together.

Fan Belt, Auxiliary Belt or Serpentine Belt: What’s the Difference?

In most modern cars, these are all names for the same belt, which is why quotes and online guides can seem confusing:

  • Fan belt is the older name, from when the belt also drove the engine’s cooling fan. Most cars now use an electric fan, but the name has stuck.

  • Auxiliary belt or accessory belt describes what it does: it runs the auxiliary parts around the engine.

  • Serpentine belt refers to the way a single belt snakes around several pulleys.

  • Alternator belt is what some drivers call it, because the alternator is the part it’s best known for driving.

Some older cars have two or more separate V-shaped belts instead of one ribbed belt, but the job and the warning signs are much the same.

What Affects the Price?

  • How easy the belt is to reach. On some engines the belt sits right at the front. On others, the garage must remove covers, mounts or even a wheel arch liner to get to it, which adds labour time.

  • The tensioner and pulleys. The belt is held tight by a spring-loaded tensioner and guided by idler pulleys. When these wear, they can cause squealing and chew through a new belt quickly, so garages often recommend replacing them at the same time. It adds to the bill but saves you paying for the same labour twice.

  • The belt itself. Belt length and type vary by engine, and genuine parts usually cost more than aftermarket ones.

  • Your garage and location. Labour rates vary across the UK and between independent garages and dealers.

Can You Drive with a Broken Drive Belt?

While your car won’t grind to a halt if the drive belt breaks, you should pull over as soon as it’s safe to do so.

Without it, the battery stops charging and will run flat, the steering may become very heavy and, on cars where the belt drives the water pump, the engine can quickly overheat. If the temperature warning comes on, switch the engine off straight away to avoid serious damage.

To avoid turning a relatively affordable repair into a more expensive bill, you should avoid driving a car with a broken drive belt and get it to be towed to a local garage as soon as possible.

How Often Should I Replace My Drive Belt?

As replacement intervals vary a lot between makes and engines, we recommend checking your vehicle handbook to see what your manufacturer recommends.

Many garages replace the drive belt at the same time as a cambelt replacement, since some of the same parts need removing.

Rubber hardens and cracks with age, so the belt is also inspected as part of our full service and major service checklist. This can also mean an older car can still need a new belt, even if it hasn’t covered many miles.

Drive Belt vs Cambelt: What’s the Difference?

While both are rubber belts with similar names, they do very different jobs.

Drive belt

Cambelt (timing belt)

Where it is

Outside the engine, usually visible when you open the bonnet

Behind a cover on the engine, or inside it on some engines

What it does

Powers the alternator, air con and sometimes the water pump and power steering

Keeps the engine’s pistons and valves moving in time

If it snaps

You lose charging, steering assistance and possibly cooling

The engine stops, and on many engines serious damage follows

Typical cost

Usually under £200

Usually several hundred pounds

Warning Signs Your Drive Belt Needs Replacing

A worn drive belt usually gives some warning before it fails, so you should book a replacement if you notice any of these:

  • A squealing or chirping noise from the engine. This is the classic sign, and it’s often worst on cold, damp mornings, when you turn the steering wheel or when the air con is on. A screeching sound when starting your car has a few possible causes, but a slipping belt is one of the most common.

  • Visible wear on the belt. Cracks across the ribs, fraying edges, a shiny glazed surface or chunks missing from the ribs all mean the belt is due a change.

  • The battery warning light comes on. If the belt is slipping or has snapped, the alternator can’t charge the battery. Although this could just be a fault with your alternator or your battery, it’s still worth getting it checked.

  • Heavy steering. On cars with hydraulic power steering, a slipping or broken belt means the steering suddenly feels much heavier. If the belt looks fine, the problem may lie with the steering system itself, in which case you can compare prices for power steering repairs.

  • Air con blowing warm. On most petrol and diesel cars, the belt drive the air con compressor, which ensures your air conditioning system chills the air coming through your vents.

  • The engine running hot. On engines where the belt also drives the water pump, a failing belt can cause overheating.

Frequently asked questions

On an engine where the belt is easy to reach, it often takes less than an hour. It takes longer where other parts need removing first, or if the tensioner is being replaced too.
A worn tensioner, a misaligned or worn pulley or oil or coolant on the belt can all cause squealing, even with a brand new belt. Your garage can check these when they fit it.
Most modern cars have an automatic tensioner, so there’s nothing to adjust by hand. If the belt squeals, it usually means the belt or the tensioner needs replacing.
The drive belt isn’t one of the items listed in the MOT inspection, so a worn belt won’t normally cause a fail on its own. It is usually inspected as part of a full or major service.
Garages marked as BMG Verified have been physically visited by our team and meet our clear service level agreement standards for ratings and reliability.
