You don’t have to worry about any emissions tests with an electric car, and more time is spent ensuring your battery is in good condition. During your electric car’s MOT, the mechanic will also inspect your charging equipment and port for damage.
All other aspects that are the same on a petrol or diesel model, such as your brakes, wheels, lights and tyres, will be inspected in the same way.
• Battery Maintenance – it is important that you look after your battery properly to ensure your vehicle passes its electric car MOT. It is recommended that you never allow the battery to run out completely and that it is always charged to between 20% and 80%.
• Brake Maintenance – EVs use regenerative braking, which means the energy which is lost when the car slows down is converted back into stored energy in the battery. This means your brake pads and discs will not have as much wear and tear. This doesn’t mean you won’t ever need to replace your electric car's brake pads or brake discs replaced, but you should be able to go longer between replacements.
• Tyres Maintenance – EVs weigh more than petrol or diesel cars due to the way they are produced and the materials they are made from. They also need to be able to cope with the additional accelerating power and create less noise. You should always keep on top of the air pressure and the tread depth and have them replaced accordingly.
