A mobile headlight bulb replacement can cost anywhere between £50 and £130, depending on your car and the type of bulb it needs.
Standard halogen bulbs are the cheapest to replace, while xenon or HID bulbs cost more and sit towards the top of that range. Labour makes up a big part of the price on some cars, because the bulb can only be reached by moving trim, the wheel arch liner or even the bumper.
When you search, you’ll see an hourly labour rate range for each mobile mechanic near you, so you can compare them before you book. Your chosen mechanic can then confirm the total cost for your car.
Typical UK costs based on published industry estimates as of 20th October 2026. Prices are representative figures only as costs vary depending on your make and model, the parts used and your chosen mobile mechanic. It depends on your make and model. Many cars use halogen headlight bulbs, others use xenon or HID bulbs, and many newer cars have LED headlights.
You don’t need to work this out yourself. When you book, your mobile mechanic can check which bulb your car needs and come prepared to fit it at your home or workplace
Not in a halogen headlight. Fitting LED or HID bulbs into headlight units designed for halogen bulbs is an MOT failure on cars first used from 1 April 1986, because the bulb and the lamp aren’t compatible.
If you’d like brighter headlights, a road-legal performance halogen bulb is the simplest option. Changing to LED or HID lighting means fitting complete headlight units designed for it, which is a much bigger job.
Some cars have sealed headlight units, where the light source can’t be replaced on its own. If yours stops working, you’ll usually need to replace the whole headlight unit rather than just the bulb, and your mechanic can tell you if that’s the case for your car.
It’s often worth it. At the MOT, your headlights must work as a matched pair, giving out light of substantially the same colour and intensity, and a brand new bulb next to an old one can look noticeably different.
Replacing both at once also means you get the same light from each side of the car when you’re driving at night.
You’ll usually notice a headlight bulb has gone in one of these ways:
One headlight is dimmer than the other, or not working at all
A headlight flickers
A bulb warning symbol appears on your dashboard
Other drivers flash their lights at you
Your car gets an MOT advisory or fails because of a headlight
The easiest way to check your car lights is to park facing a wall or garage door with your headlights on, so you can see both beams.
