How Much Does a Headlight Replacement Cost?

Replacing a whole headlight unit usually costs between £50 and £400 on most cars, while LED or xenon units on some cars can cost £700 or more. The price depends mainly on the type of headlight and your make and model.

If only the bulb has gone, you can compare car bulb replacement prices instead.

When Does a Headlight Unit Need Replacing?

A blown bulb can usually be replaced on its own, but the whole headlight unit may need replacing if:

•       The lens or casing is cracked, chipped or smashed

•       The seal has failed, so condensation keeps coming back

•       Your car has sealed headlight units (some LED and some xenon headlights are made this way), so a failed light can't be fixed with a new bulb.

Should I Replace One Headlight or Both?

You can replace just one headlight, but if you only replace one, it needs to match the other. In the MOT, headlights that are meant to be a matched pair must be the same shape, size and colour.

Signs Your Headlights Need Attention

You might need your headlights checking if you notice any of the following:

•       Flickering or dim headlights

•       The headlights won't turn on

•       Condensation inside the headlight

•       A cloudy or yellowed lens

•       Visible headlight damage

A headlight problem can be down to the bulb, the wiring or the unit itself, so it's worth getting it checked as soon as you notice an issue. You can also check your car lights yourself.

Frequently asked questions

We wouldn't recommend it. The Highway Code says to take special care that your lights are working, and that they must be kept clean and clear and properly adjusted so they don't dazzle other road users. A headlight that isn't working is also a major MOT fault.
If only one of your headlights isn't working, it is likely that the bulb has burned out.

Headlights can also stop working because of damaged wiring or moisture build-up in the headlight housing.

You should also be wary of condensation on the inside surface of the headlight, as moisture can cause corrosion inside the headlight over time, which can lead to the light failing.
Yes. A headlight that's missing or not working, a seriously damaged lens or reflector and headlight aim that's outside the limits are all major faults that will fail your MOT. On LED headlights, up to half of the light sources not working is a minor fault.
Garages marked as BMG-Verified have been assessed by our team for customer service standards, ratings and reliability.
Condensation can build up in your headlights due to holes or cracks letting moisture in. If it keeps coming back after it's been cleared, the seal has probably failed. If your lens is damaged, then the headlamp unit may need to be replaced altogether.
Replacing a headlight bulb usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, while replacing a whole headlight unit usually takes 1 to 2 hours, or up to 4 hours on some cars, depending on your car’s make and model and how easy it is to access the headlight assembly.
We do not currently display instant prices for headlight replacements on our platform. You can compare labour rates from local garages instead, and your chosen garage will confirm the cost once they've inspected your car.
We recognise the top-performing garages in your area with a Silver, Gold or Top Tier badge. These badges help you spot garages that deliver customer service that goes above and beyond for drivers, offering great value, high standards and satisfaction/high ratings.
If you aren't sure which headlight repair your car needs, you don't need to worry. When you book a general repair, you can find a mechanic who can take a look at your car and determine the type of repair or replacement required.
