If there’s anyone who loves luxury, it’s the rich and famous. Fast and lavish cars have been synonymous with celebrities for a long time, so it makes sense that as electric cars become mainstream, some of the world’s most famous faces join the electric revolution.
Here are some of the cars owned and driven by celebrities.
Robert Downey Jr
It says something about a car when Iron Man himself favours it. The Audi E-tron was featured in one of the highest grossing movies of all time, Avengers: Endgame, where Robert Downey Junior’s billionaire playboy-cum-superhero Tony Stark drives the electric car towards the Avenger’s HQ in gorgeous action shots.
RDJ loved the car so much he arrived at the Endgame premier in his E-tron and is often spotted zooming around Hollywood in his beloved EV.
The E-tron boasts several models, such as the Q4, the Q8, and the GT quattro. Browse the full collection on Audi’s website.
Joe Rogan
Podcaster and comedian Joe Rogan congratulated Tesla founder Elon Musk for ‘knocking it out the park with this crazy thing’ on Instagram after posting a picture of his sleek Tesla Model S. He praised it for its speed, for good reason – the Plaid version of the Model S can do 0-60mph in under two seconds.
Rogan isn’t the only celebrity who has been spotted nipping around Los Angeles in this particular Tesla model: Cameron Diaz, Will Smith, Shakira, Ben Afflick, Morgan Freeman and Steven Spielberg have all been spotted driving the Model S, proving it a solid favourite with A-Listers.
Ed Sheeran
The ID.Buzz is an electric take on the classic campervan, and pop superstar Ed Sheeran such a fan that he planned to drive his Buzz on the ‘=’ leg of his European tour, alongside his wife and child.
Sheeran said he wanted ‘to travel to each show as electric as possible’, proving that not all celebs are travelling by private jets everywhere.
The ID.Buzz was voted the What Car? 2023 Car of The Year, and boasts a 258-mile range, a fast charge time of half an hour, and a plethora of style options – it’s no wonder Sheeran is a fan.
Nico Rosberg
It’s safe to say that ex-Formula 1 champion Nico Rosberg knows about fast cars. He was one of the first people to own the Rimac Nevera, which holds the title of ‘Fastest EV On Earth’ – it can reach a top speed of 258 mph, and can reach zero to sixty in just 1.85 seconds.
Production of the Nevera is limited to 150 vehicles, so it is unlikely you’ll be able to get your hands on one.
James May
Top Gear legend James May obviously knows a thing or two about cars, so it is a credit to the BMW i3 that he is a huge fan. His very own i3 was featured on Top Gear’s spin off show The Grand Tour, where May challenged co-star Jeremy Clarkson to a comparison test with his Volkswagen GTI.
The BMW i3 isn’t the only eco-friendly car that May favours, as he is also the proud owner of a Toyota Mirai – which isn’t petrol, diesel, or even electric, but powered by hydrogen. The Mirai is one of two hydrogen vehicles available in the UK, the other being a Hyundai Nexo.
Unfortunately, there are only 15 hydrogen refuelling centres available in the UK currently, so we probably won’t see James May using the Mirai as his daily runaround for a while yet. However, it reassuring to see so many stars – especially ones famed for their knowledge of cars - behind the eco-friendly revolution.
