The capital of Wales since only 1955, Cardiff has emerged in recent decades as a lively, stylish, self-assured and cosmopolitan city offering culture, history and nightlife as well as the beauty and tranquillity of nearby coastal and rural areas.
Sitting between an ancient fort and a contemporary waterfront, Cardiff is a compact city whose architectural delights can easily be reached on foot. It’s not just the rugby that draws in the crowds, when the weekend arrives the city is thronged with shoppers at the Hayes, party-goers at the pubs and clubs and a buzzing atmosphere.
The Wales Millennium Centre, The Motorpoint Arena and the pretty Edwardian New Theatre are the place to enjoy internationally renowned theatre, dance, opera and concerts. It’s easy to lose a few hours in The National Museum of Cardiff or experience time travel Tardis-style at the Doctor Who Experience at Cardiff Bay. For more earthbound time travel, soak up the past at Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch.
Cardiff offers a diversity of shopping experiences, from the historic covered market to the glass-canopied Victorian and Edwardian shopping arcades, as well as brand new shopping centres in the pedestrianised town centre.
If you feel the need to get physical after sitting in a car for hours then Cardiff’s Olympic swimming pool, ice rink and white water rafting at the International Sports Village will satisfy all sporting tastes.
As cities go, Cardiff is an easy place to drive around but most of the central city streets between Westgate St, Castle St and St David's are closed to traffic. There is free street parking in the suburbs and Pontcanna's Cathedral Road has unrestricted parking, but it can be tricky finding an empty spot during working hours. St David's has 2000 parking spaces above the shopping centre, with an additional 550 below John Lewis.
Cardiff is accessed from junctions 29 to 34 on the M4, which connects the city to Newport, Bristol, Bath, Swindon and Reading in the east terminating at London, and Bridgend, Swansea, Llanelli in the west, terminating near Carmarthen.
