An MOT for a car should never cost you more than £54.85, because that's the legal maximum a test centre can charge, and in practice most drivers pay less.

Across all standalone MOT tests booked through BookMyGarage between October 2025 and September 2026, the average price was £47.61 and half of all drivers paid £49 or less.

That gap between the maximum fee and what you could pay is why it's always worth comparing garages before you book.

What is the Maximum an MOT Can Cost?

The government sets a maximum fee for every class of vehicle, and no MOT test centre is allowed to charge more than that for the test itself. There's no VAT on the fee, so the maximum you see is the maximum you pay.

What Do Drivers Actually Pay for an MOT?

Seven in ten MOTs booked through BookMyGarage cost less than the maximum fee, although nearly three in ten drivers still paid the full £54.85 between October 2025 and September 2026:

Prices are based on MOTs for cars (class 4) booked on BookMyGarage between 1st October 2025 and 30th September 2026, grouped by the region drivers booked from. MOT prices vary by garage and location, so these figures are for representative purposes only.

Why Do MOT Prices Vary Between Garages?

The law only sets a maximum, so each garage decides its own MOT price based on the area they’re based, overhead costs and other factors.

Some of the best-value MOTs come as part of a bundle. Many garages discount the MOT when you book it with a service so, on BookMyGarage, you can get an MOT from as little as £19 when you're booking your MOT and service together.

In fact, across the bookings we analysed, drivers who added a service paid an average of £30.11 for the MOT test, compared with £47.61 for an MOT on its own, a difference of £18.50.

What Else Could an MOT Cost You?

The test fee is capped, but the total cost of your MOT isn't. There are two extra costs you should plan for in case your car fails the test, especially if you drive an older vehicle.

The first is a retest, although there are many circumstances where this is free. You’ll only be charged a partial retest fee if you take your vehicle away for repairs and bring it back withing 10 working days.

If you leave the retest any longer than that, you’ll need to pay for a full retest at the full price.

The second, and usually bigger, cost is repairs. MOT repair bills have risen sharply in recent years, with drivers now paying up to 70% more to fix a failure than they did in 2022. A quick check of your tyres, lights and wipers before the test can help you avoid an unnecessary failure.

Is a Cheap MOT Worth It?

Yes. Because every test centre works to the same standards, a lower price doesn't mean a less thorough test, and there's no reason to pay more than you need to. The test stays the same regardless of what you pay, so a £30 MOT follows exactly the same checklist as one that costs £54.85.

That being said, we believe the garage itself matters more than a low MOT price.

A good garage will explain any failures or advisories clearly and give you a price for the repairs before starting any work, and you're free to choose where those repairs are done. Reading reviews from other drivers and looking for the BMG-Verified* badge are two easy ways to find a garage that offers genuinely good value, not just a low headline price.

* Garages marked as BMG Verified have been physically visited by our team and meet our clear service level agreement standards for ratings and reliability.

How to Get the Best Value on Your MOT

Booking in advance means you usually get more choice of dates and garages (especially as our own data shows that fewer drivers are booking ahead than a year ago), and it also means that you can find a great value deal without the stress that comes with needing a last-minute slot. Plus, you’ll also have time to sort out any repairs your car might need before you risk driving with an expired MOT.

That’s why you can get your MOT done up to a month minus a day before your current certificate runs out and still keep the same renewal date - so there’s really nothing to lose by booking early.

If you're not sure when yours expires, you can check when your MOT is due in seconds. And, if you’re not already taking advantage of our MOT reminder service within your free MyGarage account, sign up today so you can book early and never have to worry about missing it.

And the easiest way to ensure you get the best value MOT for your needs is to compare local test centres like-for-like. We show verified reviews, accurate prices set by each garage and their live availability side by side so you can find the one that truly works for you, rather than just booking with the first one you find.

Enter your reg and postcode to compare MOT prices near you, see verified reviews and book in seconds, with no payment taken upfront.

Methodology

We analysed MOT bookings for cars (class 4) made through BookMyGarage between 1st October 2025 and 30th September 2026, looking at the price of each MOT booked. Averages and medians exclude any MOTs booked at £0 as part of a promotion. Regional figures are grouped by where drivers booked from, and regions with too few bookings for a reliable figure have been left out. Percentages are rounded to two decimal places.
