By law, a vehicle must be inspected exactly as it is presented for an MOT — we are not permitted to clear warning lights before testing as you presumed, as doing so would be illegal. Your car had engine management light and an electronic stability fault light on, both of which are MOT failures. It also failed on a split lower suspension ball joint cover. The £300 quote was for specialist diagnostic work to investigate the root cause of the warning lights. While the MOT identifies what has failed, pinpointing why those lights are on requires dedicated diagnostic equipment that is costly to purchase and maintain — this falls outside the scope of a standard MOT, and was explained to you on the day.
