Driving in the East Midlands
From Lincoln’s winding streets and glorious medieval cathedral, to legendary Sherwood Forest and the natural drama of the Peaks, the East Midlands is a varied region. 88% of the land is rural, though the major cities of Nottingham, Leicester and Derby mean that the population stands at around 4.5 million. The geographical centre of England lies in Higham on the Hill in west Leicestershire, close to the boundary between the East and West Midlands.
The East Midlands’ coastline features some great driving, with the A158 Lincolnshire coast road traversing the glorious scenery of the ‘Wolds’, a classically English landscape of rolling hills and green fields which has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. To the North of the region, the Peak District which take up much of Derbyshire can get snowy and icy in the Winter months, so drivers should exercise care and take the usual precautions to ensure that cars are always in the best condition possible before hitting the road.
The East Midlands’ motorway network includes a large chunk of the M1, which serves all of the region's county towns (with the exception of Lincoln), and links it to London in the South and Leeds in the North. The region also covers a large chunk of the A1 which is a major artery for the UK's agricultural industry.
However, motorists beware; the region has some of the most congested roads in the country, with Nottingham coming 5th in the UK for traffic jams. Furthermore, a combination of low motorway travel and high single carriageway travel makes the East Midlands’ roads statistically the most dangerous overall in the country, with the region losing the greatest GDP per km travelled from serious crashes on motorways and ‘A’ roads. The highest risk road in the region is the A4300 through Kettering, so take extra care when driving on this notorious route.
