How Much Does an Electric Car Service Cost?

Find out how much an electric car service costs.

Just like ICE vehicles, it is highly recommended that you have your electric car serviced at least once a year to keep it in its best condition. It will also increase the resell value of your vehicle, and save you money in the long run.

Many people believe that an electric car service will cost more than an ICE car service – this is not the case.

How Much Does an Electric Car Service Cost?

The average electric car service cost will be anywhere between £100 and £250, depending on the make and model of your car. According to our data, the average cost to service an electric car is £103.

The cost will also differ depending on the labour costs of your chosen garage, where you live and whether you book a year 1 or year 2 service.

Does an Electric Car Service Cost More Than an ICE Service?

According to exclusive BookMyGarage bookings data, an electric car service costs less than an ICE or hybrid car. We found that the average cost of an electric car service is £103. The average cost for a hybrid car service is £163, a petrol car service £151, and a diesel car service £163.

However, be aware that you may have to factor in extra travel costs. Not every garage offers electric car servicing, so you might have to travel further to a garage that can facilitate your car’s service. In fact, only 16% of UK mechanics are qualified to carry out electric vehicle servicing.

What Does an EV Service Include?

A mechanic has less to check on an electric vehicle service. This is down to several reasons, such as not needing any oil or fluids, and not having an exhaust, spark plugs or clutch, among other aspects. This also means that electric cars need less maintenance than ICEs.

Here is a list of everything that will be checked on your EV service:

  • External Lights

  • Instrument Warning Lights

  • Horn

  • Windscreen Wipers

  • Windscreen Washers & Screenwash (Top up if needed)

  • Condition of Windscreen & Mirrors

  • Condition of Number Plates

  • Condition of Seat Belts

  • Top Up Brake Fluid (if required)

  • Brake Pad & Disc Wear

  • Visible Brake Pipes & Hoses

  • Handbrake Operation

  • Brake Callipers

  • Condition of Wheels & Tyres (adjust tyre pressure if needed)

  • Condition of Springs, Shock Absorbers & Other Suspension Parts

  • Condition of Steering Rack Gaiters & Other Steering Parts

  • Any Excessive Play in Wheel Bearings

  • Condition of High Voltage Battery (and report)

  • Condition of 12volt Battery (and report)

  • Operation of all Driver EV Controls, Warning Systems & Charging Points

  • Drive Shaft Gaiters

  • Any Oil Leaks

Why Does an Electric Car Service Cost Less?

Your electric car service costs less than an ICE car service due to its mechanical makeup. There are fewer moving parts on an electric car, so less work needs to be carried out.

Electric cars also do not require fluid top-ups such as engine oil. They also do not require air filter changes, spark plug replacements (on petrol cars) or fuel filter replacements (on diesel cars). Simply put, there is less work to be done.
