How Does MOT Collection and Delivery Work?

During an MOT with Collection and Delivery, the technician will arrive at an address you provide during the booking process on the morning of your test. They will either park their vehicle or be dropped off by another member of staff, collect your car keys and drive your car to the test centre.

Once there, they will complete the MOT as normal and let you know whether it has passed or failed, completing any necessary repairs and an MOT retest (as long as you agree to the work).

After your car has passed its MOT, you will pay the garage over the phone and then a technician will drop it back at the end of the day, returning the keys and any paperwork from the appointment.

Usually, the garage will arrange a pickup time in advance. This may be a window or they may provide a more accurate time, depending on how they organise their Collection and Delivery system. They will let you know when they will drop your car back while you are paying for your appointment over the phone.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Who Offers MOT Collection and Delivery?

Many garages offer a vehicle collection and delivery service to help drivers fit an MOT or service into their busy lives. Some offer it completely free of charge, while others may ask for a fee to cover the additional fuel costs and time the service takes.

Enter your reg and postcode into the booking tool above to check which garages near you offer a Collection and Delivery service with an MOT.

Why Should I Consider Collection and Delivery For My MOT?

A Collection and Delivery service makes it incredibly easy to fit an MOT into your normal schedule. If you struggle to find the time to take your car to a garage with work and other commitments, it may benefit you to book vehicle collection and delivery this year. It also means you don’t have to worry about getting to and from the garage without your car.

You can book your Collection and Delivery from your home or work address, whichever suits you best.

When is Collection and Delivery Available With an MOT?

In most cases, Collection and Delivery is always available when you book an MOT.

The only exception may be if you make an MOT only booking. Some garages don’t offer their vehicle collection and delivery service with these bookings or, if they do, it may incur an additional charge.

Generally, collection and delivery is best booked with an MOT and service as this is generally free. Not only does this make your life easier, but it also ensures that your car is as safe and well-maintained as possible.

Are There Any Restrictions On the Collection and Delivery Service?

Yes, distance is usually the main restriction garages place on their Collection and Delivery service. Garages listed on our comparison site provide a maximum distance they are happy to travel to provide this service, ranging from 3 to 10 miles.

The other restriction you may have to consider is that Collection and Delivery isn’t always available for MOT only bookings. Some garages won’t come to pick your car up if doing so means it will cost them money. While this may mean that you will have to pay extra, sometimes it means the service won’t be available at all.

We always let you know whether you are eligible for vehicle collection and delivery at your chosen garage in the comparison results. If it is not available at the garage you are looking at, the box will be greyed out and a reason provided.

Will My Car Be Safe During the Collection and Delivery Process?

Yes, the technician responsible for collecting and returning your vehicle will take proper care and drive it safely. There is no additional risk to booking an MOT collection and delivery vs taking your vehicle to the test centre yourself.

If you are worried about the safety of your vehicle, make sure you choose a highly recommended garage near you. We provide verified, unfiltered reviews from previous customers for all garages listed on our comparison site to help you find the best one to meet your needs.

What Can I Do to Prepare For My Collection and Delivery Service?

To ensure the collection goes smoothly, ensure you have your car keys to hand & your mobile switched on in case the technician needs to call you to find your address or your vehicle. You should also be at the address you provided the garage in the booking process during the collection window they provide.

If you won’t be at the same address, or want your car returned to a different address, make sure you discuss this with the technician before they leave with your vehicle so you can make a plan to return the keys and any paperwork from your appointment.

The technician may also discuss any additional notes you left during the booking process to help them identify and fix your issue.

Is the Garage Insured to Drive My Car?

Yes, garages that offer a Collection and Delivery service are insured to do so.

How Much Fuel Should There Be in My Car?

We recommend that your car has at least ¼ of a tank before any MOT to ensure it can pass the emissions test.

If you book a Collection & Delivery service with your MOT, or you suspect it may need additional repairs that require a road test, you should ensure there is more fuel in your vehicle to cover these needs.

The garage can refuse to carry out an MOT if they don’t think your car has enough fuel to pass the emissions test. This can lead to additional stress, so we recommend filling your car with fuel before an MOT if required.
