Compare Local MOT Centres & Book an Appointment at the Best One Before Your Expiry Date to Ensure Your Vehicle is Road Legal

If your Tesla is due an MOT test, you must book an appointment before the expiry date to continue driving on UK roads. The test checks whether your car meets road safety and environmental standards, and you will be prosecuted if caught driving without a valid MOT certificate.

The only exception to this rule is if you are driving it to a garage for repairs after a failed test or to a pre-booked MOT.

Book your MOT well in advance to avoid the risk of missing your test date. You can book up to 12 months in advance through our online comparison site and save up to 70% on an MOT near you in the process by comparing deals.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do Teslas Need an MOT?

Yes, your Tesla requires a yearly MOT test once it turns 3-years-old like any petrol or diesel vehicle.

Failing to book an inspection for your vehicle before its MOT expiry date would make it illegal to drive on UK roads, as there is no guarantee that it is completely safe and roadworthy.

If your Tesla is due an MOT, enter your reg and postcode into BookMyGarage.com today to find and book the best deal at an MOT centre near you.

How Do You Test Tesla Brakes on an MOT?

Modern Tesla brakes can be tested on the rolling road during an MOT inspection, but there are a few extra steps to carry out before starting the test:
1. EPB Dynamic Mode must be activated (to conduct the Electronic Parking Brake test)
2. The vehicle must be put into neutral while sat on the rolling road.
3. The Park button on the gear selector stick must be pressed and held until the rear wheels stop rotating.

You can then shift the vehicle into Drive to release the parking brake and finish the test.

To test the Tesla’s Brake Servo, the key must be more than 2 metres away to ensure the vehicle does not fully power on. Once the ‘Key Not Inside’ light is visible, you can begin the brake pedal pressure test.

Does a Tesla MOT Differ from That of a Regular Car?

The main difference between a Tesla MOT and the MOT of a regular ICE is the lack of emissions and fuel system testing. Petrol and diesel vehicles are subject to an exhaust emissions test to ensure they comply with environmental standards.

As electric vehicles don’t produce any exhaust emissions, or have a traditional fuel system, they are exempt from these checks.

Additional safety checks may be carried out on your Tesla’s:
- Battery
- Electric motor
- Charging system

Other than that, there are no differences between a Tesla MOT and a regular MOT. Both aim to ensure your vehicle is safe, legal and roadworthy for the next 12 months.

How is the Battery Health of My Tesla Assessed During an MOT?

The battery health of your Tesla is not assessed during an MOT. Testers follow the standard Class 4 MOT guidelines which focus more on safety and roadworthiness than maximum efficiency.

If you think your Tesla’s battery needs assessing, you should book a service with a specialist EV-qualified service centre to diagnose and fix the issue.

Will the MOT Test the Electric Motor or Regenerative Braking System?

While your Tesla’s electric motor will not be tested during the MOT, the regenerative braking system will be. This system is subject to the same inspection as the brakes in a petrol or diesel vehicle.

If you want your electric motor tested, you will need to book an appointment with a specialist EV garage who can diagnose and repair any faults as needed.
