How Long Does it Take to Charge an Electric Car?

Find Out How Long it Takes to Charge an Electric Car at Home and Using Public Chargers

There are four types of electric car charging points currently available in the UK:

  • Slow (3-5kW). These charging points can take upwards of 24 hours to fully charge some electric cars.
  • Fast (7-22kW). 7kW chargers are the standard home charging point in the UK.
  • Rapid (25-99kW). 50kW chargers are the most common type of public charging point in the UK.
  • Ultra-Rapid (100kW+). These are currently very rare in the UK and many electric cars can’t currently use them.

Electric cars take a different length of time to fully recharge at each type of charging point.

How Long Does it Take to Fully Charge an Electric Car?

Using data collected by PodPoint, we have calculated the average time every electric car available in the UK takes to charge. We have calculated this for Slow, Fast, Rapid and Ultra-Rapid charging. We have also laid out the quickest and slowest times to show how efficient each charging point is.

Average Charging Times:

Slow (3.6kW) = 17 hours (Quickest = 5 hours; Slowest = 33 hours)

Fast (7kW) = 9 hours (Quickest = 3 hours; Slowest = 17 hours)

Rapid (50kW) = 50 minutes (Quickest = 30 minutes; Slowest = 90 minutes)

Ultra-Rapid (150kW) = 30 minutes (Quickest = 20 minutes; Slowest = 50 minutes)

While Slow and Fast figures are assuming a battery charge from 0% to 100%, the figures shown for Rapid and Ultra-Rapid chargers are from 20% to 80%. These chargers slow down significantly after 80% to preserve battery condition.

How Long Does it Take to Charge an Electric Car at Home?

The most common types of home chargers are 3.6kW and 7kW. This means that the average electric car will take 13 hours to fully recharge at home.

While it may take a lot longer to charge an EV at home, it is much more convenient, especially when charged overnight. For more information about home charging, please see this article: How Much Does it Cost to Install an Electric Car Charger at Home?

How Long Does it Take to Charge an Electric Car at a Petrol Station?

The most common types of public chargers are 50kW and 150kW. This means that the average car will take just 40 minutes to charge from 20% to 80% at a public charging point.

However, most older models are not compatible with rapid charging points. New models of the Smart forfour and Smart fortwo are also incompatible with Rapid and Ultra-Rapid charging points.

Electric Car Charging Times for Every Model

Below are the charging times for every EV model when plugged into a 50kWh Rapid Charger in minutes.

Only models compatible with rapid chargers have been included. For example, the Citroen Ami has been excluded as it can not be charged with a rapid charger due to the size of the battery.
