The Importance of Buying New Tyres

Tyres are incredibly important for your safety. They keep your vehicle in contact with the road and, if they're not in good condition, you're at increased risk of an accident. That means you need to buy new ones as soon as your vehicle needs them.

Fitting new tyres bring the following benefits:

  • Optimal traction & handling. This makes it easier to stay in control of your car and keeps you gripping the road firmly.
  • Decrease stopping distance. Worn tyres create less friction under braking, so you don't slow down as quickly. New tyres have more rubber to provide extra traction and stop you as soon as possible.
  • You can see increased fuel economy. When you buy tyres, you'll see a fuel efficiency value from A to F. Tyres marked A are the most fuel-efficient and tyres marked F the least, so the better the letter, the less you'll spend at the pump.

All of these benefits are vital but you will only see the best results if you get the correct tyres fitted to your vehicle.

How to Choose the Right Car Tyres

When it comes to choosing the correct tyre, there are a range of factors to consider. Most importantly, you must ensure they are the right size for your car. To do so, make sure you consult the sidewall of the tyres currently fitted to your vehicle and your vehicle handbook.

The numbers should look something like this:

tyre sidewall marked with red and white numbers to help drivers understand what they mean

Working from left to right, they stand for

  • Width (205)
  • Profile Height (55)
  • Rim Size (16)
  • Load Index (91)
  • Speed Rating (V)

You must choose tyres that match the manufacturer's minimum requirement for each number.

What Should I Bring to a Tyre Fitting?

The only thing your chosen garage needs to complete your tyre fitting is the locking wheel nut key. This helps the garage remove the locking wheel nut and change your tyres or complete your tyre puncture repair quickly.

If you've lost the key, check your vehicle handbook for a code that will allow you to order a replacement from the manufacturer. If you don't have access to your vehicle handbook either, most garages have tools that are able to remove the nut - it just might take a little longer.

We recommend providing a locking wheel nut key wherever possible.

FAQs

What Size Tyres Do I Need?

You need to buy new tyres that have the same size rims as those currently on your vehicle. Doing so will ensure that your vehicle is as safe and stable as possible.

The size is written on the sidewall of your current tyres. Please see the diagram above to understand how to read your sidewalls.

What is a Tyre's Speed Rating?

A tyre's speed rating is the maximum speed that the tyre is legally approved to be driven at. When you buy new tyres, they must match or exceed the speed rating recommended by the manufacturer. Failure to do so can increase your risk of an accident.

You can find the recommended speed rating for your tyres on the sidewall of those currently fitted to your vehicle.

What Pressure Should My Tyres Be?

Each tyre has a specific pressure value, measured in PSI (pounds per square inch). This is usually between 31 and 35PSI for a passenger vehicle. Any tyre that drops below 20PSI is considered a flat tyre.

We recommend that you check your tyre pressure regularly and adjust it where needed. Consult your vehicle handbook or a sticker on the inside of the driver's door to find the manufacturer's recommendations for what your tyre pressure should be.

If you're using your vehicle for towing, you may need to change your tyre pressure. The fully-laden value should also be in your vehicle handbook or on the sticker.

How Long Do Tyres Last?

Tyres should last between 4 and 6 years, or 25,000 miles, if cared for correctly. Some premium brands can last up to 10 years if you drive smoothly.

However, while tyres may last this long, you must change them earlier if you suspect their condition has deteriorated. For your safety, you should also replace tyres when they reach 10 years old regardless of condition for your safety.

When Should I Look to Buy New Tyres?

You will need to buy new tyres if you notice any of the following:

  • Low tyre tread (less than 3mm)
  • Fraying rubber
  • Cracks
  • Gouges
  • Any sign of a puncture
  • Other damage

Any of the above can increase the chances of them failing and make your car unsafe. We recommend that you check your tyres regularly to find these problems as soon as possible.
