"Helpfulness of manager Sean"
"I was recommended by family to this garage, I usually use my council MOT depot, but was staying with family for holidays when MOT due. The most notable part of the experience was just how friendly and likable the staff were, always an asset to mechanics being trusted with your car! I dropped off the car first thing in morning, the MOT was carried out swiftly, spoke to them mid-morning to arrange a minor repair requiring new parts and car was ready to be collected mid-afternoon. Hassle-free experience, how great is that?! Will be returning to this garage in future when needed."
Great Customer Service!
"Really impressed with my experience with Balham cars. The team were attentive, incredibly friendly and professional. I booked in for a full service and MOT only the day before, however they managed to fit me in, and kept me updated throughout the day on progress. I would absolutely recommend and will certainly be coming back for any repairs/services needed in the future. Thanks!"

Great honest garage
"Did my research, read lots of reviews and then took my car for MOT to Steins garage. I met quite few pleasant welcoming people including George and Craig. Car passed mot with no problems. From experience, this does not happen that often unless you deal with an honest garage. I am very please and thankful. I will be happy to take my car back for any repairs and I would definitely recommend Steins Garage to friends and family."
Power Assisted Steering, or ‘PAS' as it is also known, is a mechanism that helps you to steer your car. In most vehicles, the PAS relies on a hydraulic system to aid turning the vehicle's wheels. If you have ever driven a car with no Power Steering you will have most certainly noticed the difference between having PAS and not. Power Steering used to be a luxury in certain vehicles, but nowadays it is almost standard in every type of vehicle.
In the early days of the automotive industry, power-assisted steering was a luxury and was only available in high-end vehicles. Most new cars now have it as standard. That’s because they’ve become heavier, with wider tyres and front wheel drive, and would be extremely difficult to drive without PAS. This makes a car not only more pleasant to drive, but safer to drive too.
There are two types of hydraulic power-assisted steering: rack & pinion and the recirculating ball. Rack & pinion is the most common. The recirculating ball is far less common and only really exists in vans and trucks. Both have high-pressure hoses that connect the steering rack to the two sides of the centre seal. One hose sends hydraulic fluid from the power-steering pump to the steering mechanism, while the other directs fluid back to the pump. When turned left or right, the steering wheel’s steering mechanism allows the hydraulic fluid to pass to respective side of the steering rack, pushing the seal and rack in the necessary direction.
Electric power-assisted steering is fully electric. The wheels of the car receive direct assistance from an electric motor which is mounted on either the steering rack or steering column or directly to the steering rack. Sensors decide how much assistance to apply at any time.
When hydraulic fluid lubricates and seals the power-steering pump and hoses to prevent corrosion it can leak or gradually become less effective, making it harder to turn the steering wheel. Typically, a mechanic will check hydraulic fluid levels during an annual service.
If the electric motor fails, power-assisted steering will stop working, so the motor would need replacing. As with any electrical system, software problems can occur, necessitating an update.
Skoda has a long and storied history producing cars that are sold around the world! One of the five oldest companies producing cars today, with an unbroken history right alongside Daimler, Opel, Peugeot, and Tatra, the Skoda Works were initially established as an arms manufacturing plant in 1859. Since 1990 they’ve been part of the Volkswagen group, and this Czech brand is now known for producing a fine range of excellent value, high quality cars.
The current range comprises everything from the compact Fabia to the incredibly spacious Superb Estate with a mix of off-road and high-performance cars thrown in for good measure. The practical Yeti is an agile SUV with off-road capability, while the Octavia VRS offers sharp sports car speed.
On top of all that, customer satisfaction has consistently helped Skoda rank highly against more established competitors.
