Helpful, great service
"Very helpful staff, offered me a lift into town while I waited and offered to pick me up if needed too. No unnecessary work done, and they even gave the car a free valet for me."
"Have always had fantastic service, and this time they even prioritised my car to get it ready by a certain time."
"I used this garage for the first time and everything was very easy from booking online to getting the car back. The service was very quick and I got already a message that I could collect the car when I just had arrived back home. I learned that they also offer to collect the car at your home when you live locally and that is what I will choose the next time as I have difficulties walking. Thank you so much for such a good first experience!"
"Service and MOT completed in line with expectations. Kept fully informed of progress by friendly staff."
"Took my car for a service and MOT. It needed a few bits doing but I was kept informed throughout and the cost was exceptionally good value for money. Car even came back cleaned and hoovered. Communication was absolutely fantastic so will definitely be going back in future."
"Very happy with the work done and quality"
Power Assisted Steering, or ‘PAS' as it is also known, is a mechanism that helps you to steer your car. In most vehicles, the PAS relies on a hydraulic system to aid turning the vehicle's wheels. If you have ever driven a car with no Power Steering you will have most certainly noticed the difference between having PAS and not. Power Steering used to be a luxury in certain vehicles, but nowadays it is almost standard in every type of vehicle.
In the early days of the automotive industry, power-assisted steering was a luxury and was only available in high-end vehicles. Most new cars now have it as standard. That’s because they’ve become heavier, with wider tyres and front wheel drive, and would be extremely difficult to drive without PAS. This makes a car not only more pleasant to drive, but safer to drive too.
There are two types of hydraulic power-assisted steering: rack & pinion and the recirculating ball. Rack & pinion is the most common. The recirculating ball is far less common and only really exists in vans and trucks. Both have high-pressure hoses that connect the steering rack to the two sides of the centre seal. One hose sends hydraulic fluid from the power-steering pump to the steering mechanism, while the other directs fluid back to the pump. When turned left or right, the steering wheel’s steering mechanism allows the hydraulic fluid to pass to respective side of the steering rack, pushing the seal and rack in the necessary direction.
Electric power-assisted steering is fully electric. The wheels of the car receive direct assistance from an electric motor which is mounted on either the steering rack or steering column or directly to the steering rack. Sensors decide how much assistance to apply at any time.
When hydraulic fluid lubricates and seals the power-steering pump and hoses to prevent corrosion it can leak or gradually become less effective, making it harder to turn the steering wheel. Typically, a mechanic will check hydraulic fluid levels during an annual service.
If the electric motor fails, power-assisted steering will stop working, so the motor would need replacing. As with any electrical system, software problems can occur, necessitating an update.
One of the largest car makers in the world, Toyota offers vehicles for nearly every budget and need. Its huge range consists of everything from small city cars like the Aygo to the off-roader Land Cruiser.
Toyota played a hugely important role in making hybrid vehicles as successful as they are today, with the Prius being found on many a city street around the world. But what about the next step? Well, the hydrogen fuel cell-powered Toyota Mirai could become the new normal as far as eco-friendly driving is concerned - but we’ll have to wait and see!
Toyota is Number One
At least when it comes to global car manufacturing. Toyota happily outsells all other automotive brands, making the Japanese giant a major success story. They place quality engineering and manufacturing above all else, proving to be incredibly reliable and hugely popular with their worldwide customers.
What do you need from your garage?
This might sound like a question with an obvious answer: you need a garage that can service or repair your car quickly and at a good price. But think again and you may realise there are other factors that affect your choice of garage in Skipton. If you need to bring your son or daughter with you when you take your car in, are there toys in the waiting room? If you’re dropping the car off between school and work, can you pick up a cup of coffee while you’re there? Might the garage even collect your car and drop it back at your house after the work is done? You can find answers to all these questions on BookMyGarage.
