What does a car exhaust do?

Your car's exhaust system is made up of several pipes running from the engine, via a catalytic converter or filter and a silencer, to the rear of the vehicle. This takes the engine exhaust gasses away from the engine (and the car's occupants), but it has some other important functions along the way.

When a vehicle's engine is running, it burns fuel to create power through a process called combustion. Combustion produces harmful gases containing dangerous substances which can't be released unaltered into the air. For this reason, the gases must travel through an exhaust system that removes most of the hazardous substances first via the catalytic converter. The system's silencer also muffles a large amount of the noise from the running engine.

In order for a vehicle to run reliably and safely, the exhaust system must be working properly. Sometimes modifying the system helps the gases flow more smoothly and boosts performance and efficiency.

About Saab

Saab is a currently inactive brand of automobile manufacturer, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of Saabs still on the road. Founded in Sweden in 1945, the company is still the exclusive automobile royal warrant holder as appointed by the King of Sweden. So if you’re driving one, you’re in good royal company!

The first production model, the Saab 92, was launched in 1949. In 1968 the parent company merged with Scania-Vabis, and ten years later the Saab 900 was launched, eventually becoming Saab's best-selling model. In the mid-1980s the new Saab 9000 model also appeared. But after the company became a wholly owned GM subsidiary (and after struggling to avoid insolvency back in 2011), all vehicles under the Saab label were no longer manufactured after the summer of 2014.

The Saab garages listed here provide a range of services. It doesn’t matter what problems you’re experiencing, you’ll find a specialist Saab mechanic for the problems below and much more.
