Electric Power Steering, or “EPS” as it is also known, is a mechanism that helps you to steer your car. In most vehicles, the EPS relies on a electric motor to aid in turning the wheels. If you've ever driven a car with no Power Steering at all you will have certainly noticed the difference it makes.
Unlike hydraulic systems, electric power steering (EPS) doesn't use any form of hydraulic pressure to provide steering assistance. The technology is fully electric, with an electric motor providing direct assistance to the wheels. Since there is no power lost generating and transmitting hydraulic power, these systems are typically more efficient than hydraulic power steering.
Depending on the specific EPS system, an electric motor is mounted either to the steering column or directly to the steering rack. Sensors are used to determine how much steering force is required when it is applied so that the driver only has to use a minimum amount of effort to turn the steering wheel. Some systems have discrete settings that vary the amount of steering assist that's provided, and others work on a variable curve.
Another French company churning out good-looking vehicles, Renault has been in the business of making cars since 1899. The alliance of Renault with Nissan (conveniently called the Renault-Nissan Alliance) make up the fourth largest automotive group in the world.
Renault is also widely known for its role in motor sport, particularly Formula 1. Early work on mathematical curve modelling used on Renault car bodies is an important, but little known, part of the history of computer graphics. Renault began to take part in motorsport early in the 20th century, largely due to Marcel Renault’s own interest in the sport. Over the years, Renault acquired multiple companies with sporting connections, and in the 1970s set up its own dedicated motorsport division, Renault Sport, winning both the Le Mans 24 Hours race and the Renault Alpine A442.
But back to the world outside of motor sport! Back in 2013, the newest Renault vehicles had the lowest average CO2 emissions among European generalist brands, average at 110.1g/km.
This waterfront city in Hampshire is the most densely populated city in the UK. This means that traffic can build at Portsmouth’s rush hour, but that it’s also packed with things to do and see for all ages.
Tourists are drawn to the area for its proximity to the sea, but Portsmouth’s naval history is also a prominent feature with numerous related attractions, such as The Historic Dockyard, the D-Day Museum, the Royal Naval Museum, and the Royal Marines Museum. A number of iconic ships adorn the dockyard such as the HMS Victory, the HMS Warrior and Henry VIII’s Tudor warship the Mary Rose. For those who can handle heights, there are marvellous views from the observation deck of the Spinnaker Tower, a sweep of glass and steel shaped like a sail, which lays claim to being Britain's tallest tower outside London.
Portsmouth has a prestigious literary history and is the birthplace of many celebrated authors from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to Michelle Magorian, H.G. Wells to Neil Gaiman and most notably, Charles Dickens. The modest house in Old Commercial Road was his former abode and has been restyled to resemble the original Dickens family home.
