Electric Power Steering, or “EPS” as it is also known, is a mechanism that helps you to steer your car. In most vehicles, the EPS relies on a electric motor to aid in turning the wheels. If you've ever driven a car with no Power Steering at all you will have certainly noticed the difference it makes.
Unlike hydraulic systems, electric power steering (EPS) doesn't use any form of hydraulic pressure to provide steering assistance. The technology is fully electric, with an electric motor providing direct assistance to the wheels. Since there is no power lost generating and transmitting hydraulic power, these systems are typically more efficient than hydraulic power steering.
Depending on the specific EPS system, an electric motor is mounted either to the steering column or directly to the steering rack. Sensors are used to determine how much steering force is required when it is applied so that the driver only has to use a minimum amount of effort to turn the steering wheel. Some systems have discrete settings that vary the amount of steering assist that's provided, and others work on a variable curve.
The makers of the Italian Alfa Romeo began getting involved in car racing in 1911, but things didn’t start ramping up for them until they switched to mass-producing small vehicles rather than hand-building luxury models after the end of the second World War. Over the years they’ve competed successfully in many different varieties of motorsport, from Grand Prix motor racing to Formula One, sportscar racing, rallies, and touring car racing, but they're still known for their beautiful cars above all else.
When it comes down to it, modern Alfa Romeos are as reliable as just as cars from any other major manufacturers, but are frequently flashier looking! The MiTo and Giulietta add a bit of Italian charm to the supermini and family hatchback models respectively due to their smart styling and unique interiors. And on top of that, both are available as sporty ‘QV’ models in true Alfa Romeo tradition. Of course, you’ve got the lightweight Alfa Romeo 4C if you’re looking for a Italian sportscar to play around with.
How can you save money (and the environment) while you drive?
As every garage owner will tell you, there are some tried and tested ways to cut down on your petrol costs (and consumption) while you’re out and about in Lochcarron or beyond. One is to shut your windows. If you can hear that wind noise in your car it’s costing you more to drive. This is because the car becomes less aerodynamic and has to work harder to motor along. Removing a roof rack will improve your fuel efficiency for the same reason. Another useful tip is to combine short trips into one; each time you drive after your car has been parked for a while the engine will be cold and need to use a lot more fuel for the first 5 miles or so. If you do one trip from school drop-off to supermarket to office you’ll use far less fuel than if you do all those trips individually.
