Saab is a currently inactive brand of automobile manufacturer, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of Saabs still on the road. Founded in Sweden in 1945, the company is still the exclusive automobile royal warrant holder as appointed by the King of Sweden. So if you’re driving one, you’re in good royal company!
The first production model, the Saab 92, was launched in 1949. In 1968 the parent company merged with Scania-Vabis, and ten years later the Saab 900 was launched, eventually becoming Saab's best-selling model. In the mid-1980s the new Saab 9000 model also appeared. But after the company became a wholly owned GM subsidiary (and after struggling to avoid insolvency back in 2011), all vehicles under the Saab label were no longer manufactured after the summer of 2014.
About the Saab 900
The Saab 900 is a compact luxury automobile which was produced by Saab from 1978 until 1998 in two different generations. The first generation from 1978 to 1993 is now known as the "classic" while the generation made from 1994 to 1998 is known as the "new generation". The "classic" Saab 900 was based on the Saab 99 chassis, though with a longer front end to meet U.S. frontal crash regulations. The 900 was produced in sedans with 2 and 4 doors, and in hatchback form with 3 and 5 doors. In addition, from 1986, a convertible model was produced by the company.
Problems with Saab
If you’re driving a Saab 900 you may have issues with the display panel failing, or you may have noticed that it runs a bit roughly and stalls when idling. If you’re driving the Saab 9-3, be aware that many drivers have complained about it running roughly as well, and there have been complaints about the chip key not working properly.
Even though Saab aren’t making vehicles anymore, you’ll still need garage services for any problems that arise with your Saab as well as regular servicing. Book My Garage will happily find you a Saab-friendly mechanic in the area to sort you right out!
